Founders' Journey
The Heart of Prairie Berries: A Family Story
At Prairie Berries, we believe that the best things in life are rooted in family, hard work, and a deep connection to the land.
Their Journey began in 1993, when Sandy and Ken Purdy, along with their two sons, decided to make a bold change in their lives. After years of farming wheat, they were seeking a new direction — something that would not only provide for their family but also leave a lasting impact on the community and the environment.
In the early 90s, the Purdys made a choice that would forever alter the course of their farming legacy. They planted their first Saskatoon berry orchard — a native fruit with a rich history in Canada’s prairies but virtually unknown to the broader market. They saw the potential of this small, antioxidant-rich berry as a new healthy food that could thrive in their local climate, reduce their farm’s reliance on chemicals and fossil fuels, and provide a more sustainable future.
For Sandy and Ken, it wasn’t just about growing fruit; it was about creating something bigger. Prairie Berries was born from their vision of a farm that could support their family for generations to come while offering products that were both healthy and eco-friendly. With every berry picked and every product created, Sandy and Ken put their hearts into the business, guided by their deep love for the land and their belief in the potential of the Saskatoon Berry.

A Moment of Recognition
The turning point for Prairie Berries came in 2010 when Sandy, determined to grow the family business, appeared on Dragon’s Den — Canada’s popular business reality show. With her niece, Allison Ozog, by her side, Sandy pitched the idea of turning the Saskatoon berry into a mainstream superfruit. This exposure catapulted the family farm into the national spotlight, expanding their reach across Canada and beyond.
